SMRBC Frequently Asked Questions
Staples Mill Road Baptist Church Senior Pastor Jim Booth Responds to some FAQs.
What are you about at Staples Mill? In short, we are about Jesus. It is a joy to know Him and to be known by Him. It is also our joy to serve Him in the strength He supplies. All that we do is aimed at reflecting God's greatness. Our mission statement says it this way: Based on the Word of God, motivated by the love of Christ, and empowered by the Holy Spirit, the mission of Staples Mill Baptist Church is to obey and glorify God by proclaiming the Good News of Jesus Christ, equipping the saints for His service, and sharing the love of God with all people.
What will happen when I visit? My family and I have moved a lot in our 27 years of marriage. We have lived in five states and three foreign countries. Needless to say, we've visited more churches than we can count, at least in those places that had churches! I know something of the anxiety that you feel as you get ready to come to visit us in person for the first time. Let me assure you that we will make every effort to make your visit as stress-free as possible. We do not plan to embarrass you or single you out in anyway. Hopefully, the friendly people around you will speak to you and give you a genuine one-on-one welcome as you move into the worship center. With many new faces in the church these days it will not be obvious that you are a visitor. In fact you may be sitting next to other guests. So, come and be with us this week.
Our Life Groups (Sunday School) meet at 9:30 and 11:00 on Sunday mornings and will give you a chance to get to know people around your age in a more intimate setting. Additional Life Groups meet on Sunday evenings. The morning worship services begin at 8:15, 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. and involve contemporary (along with some upbeat traditional) music and an interesting, relevant message from God's Word. When you come, be sure to seek me out and say hello.
Where do you see Staples Mill going in the years ahead? I Want to see us growing deeper in Christ, while reaching farther in His name. Like a healthy tree I want to see us strongly rooted and abundantly fruitful (Psalm 1). We intend to grow in both depth and reach. We are not setting numerical goals, but we are intentionally focused on maturing people in Christ and introducing increasing multitudes of people to Him. This is going to be a thrill as we see more and more lives transformed by the power and love of Christ. Staples Mill will look very different in the years ahead as many new people are welcomed into the family and are matured into leadership responsibilities in the mission God has given us.
What do you believe? We are a fellowship of people who have been and are being changed by Christ and His Word. We don't study God merely as theory or history. We are getting to know Him through relationship. We completely trust the message of the Bible. The Bible accurately reveals what God wants us to know about Himself, the world around us, and how to live in it. God is amazing! He is the creator of the heavens and earth. He is completely perfect in every respect. We haven't gotten over the reality that this awesome, perfect God would love and offer forgiveness to people like us. We honor God, recognizing Him as both majestic and personal. The more we get to know Him the more we are awed by Him. The more we get to know Him, the more we respect Him, and the more we want to draw close to Him through Christ. It is an incredible love that He would offer forgiveness and acceptance to us through Christ's sacrifice in our place on the cross. We trust in Christ alone for life that is both abundant and everlasting. We have no righteousness of our own. In Christ we've taken part in a great exchange. We've taken our sinfulness to Jesus and we've received His righteousness. If you want to read more details about what we believe, click this link to read the Baptist Faith and Message. What about the staff? We are a close and unified team, grateful that God would use us in His service. Our ministry team is made up of Tyler Simmons (Interim Associate Pastor for Student Ministries), Tommy Knighten (Associate Pastor for Children & Families), Marsha Perkins (Music Director), and me (Pastor Jim). There are also a number of other dedicated staff members functioning in a variety of support roles and in the CDC (Child Development Center).
How do you preach? I don't believe in boring people with such great news! God changed my heart and mind through His Word. I came to know Christ in high school, primarily through reading my Bible alone each night in my bedroom. The teachings and principles of the Bible continue to shape and renew me daily. As a pastor I desire to share messages with the church that draw them into this life-changing Book. I am excited about what God has to say to us, so I talk energetically and with passion as we look at the Bible, verse-by-verse (expository). I am committed to preaching God's Word with accuracy, clarity, relevance, and joy. One of the highest compliments I received was at an international church in Cyprus several years ago. A woman came up to me and said with a German accent: I don't like sermons, but if every sermon were like yours, I would like them. Above all, I rely on the Holy Spirit to guide in the study and delivery of His Word. Only He can change lives!
